Robert,

Next is still working on the open version of Next's OS (OpenStep 4.1)
which has an open API (Application Programming Interface). SUN has
it's own implimentation of OpenStep although I don't know the status
SUN's implementation. OpenStep is an Object Oriented operating system
that is very mature and highly regarded. They also have 40% of there
staff working on WEB technology that allows the dynamic generation of
customized WEB pages from relational databases - they were lucky that
they developed some of the supporting modules of this technology before
the WEB caught on. After working as a consultant in this technology
(still am), I believe Next still has a lead. The technology is the
strongest asset of Next and their marketing has been a complete failure.
I don't think Jobs will last long at Apple - his ego is still too big
that if Apple does not go in the direction that he wants, he will
probably quit. This is probably a way out for Jobs to save face. The
thing that I am most interested in is that if Apple bought Next for 400M
then does that mean that apple will use Next OS? What about Be? Will
it replace Be? Also, Next does have a Power PC version of it's OS
running in the labs (has had it for over a year now).
