Steven,

Bernie and I both happen to be in San Jose. In fact I had dinner with him tonight. There has been no history of violent government overthrows in Malaysia though there was racial violence in 1969. Since the UMNO coalition took the reins they have been in power and it is doubtful that will change. Anwar is playing out his end game. He led an open, and unauthorized, demonstration in K.L. that called for Mahatir's resignation. He was arrested a few hours later. Bernie and I discussed this tonight and I will take the liberty of mentioning that he has been told that many people believe that Anwar is innocent of the sexual charges and is being railroaded. Whether this means anyone is strong or brave enough to take on Mahatir is another story altogether. My guess is that Anwar will largely be forgotten in a year but that this may cost Mahatir his job if the election is held as scheduled next year. However, Mahatir may call a special election, rushing the process, before any opposition is allowed to build. Many folks in UMNO will be disaffected by this whole process.

Best,
Stitch
