the above cited excerpt from needham & co. is pretty much confirmed by electronic engineering times, foreboding headline notwithstanding.

Spotlight: The Mountain States -- Some unease in Rockies' employment market
Loring Wirbel

Robert "Rocky" Scott, director of the Colorado Springs Economic Development Agency, pointed to the gargantuan empty building on Garden of the Gods Road that Rockwell Semiconductor Systems built for an 8-inch fab but never opened because of the collapse in Asian foundry prices. The building is a monument to the ability of a boom market to go bust in a heartbeat. Such a turnaround occurred in Colorado Springs in the mid-1980s.

Still, Vitesse Semiconductor Corp.'s nearby Garden of the Gods GaAs fab continues to hire at a rapid pace. But business is flat at the Atmel Corp. CMOS fab on Colorado Springs' west side. And Symbios Inc.'s 8-inch fab at the south end of town has an even more uncertain status. LSI Logic Corp. acquired Symbios early this summer and has not yet decided whether to retain the Symbios fabs in Colorado Springs and Fort Collins.
