Airbus partner says profits must be focus - NYT

NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters) - A representative of a partner of European consortium Airbus [ARBU.CN] says the plane maker must focus more on the bottomline, the New York Times business section reported Monday.

"Airbus does not make enough money to cover the capital invested in the business," Tony Rice, representing British Aerospace Plc (Lse:BA) , said, according to the report. "The challenge for us is turning that into a profitable business. We don't make enough money," he added in the report.

The drive for market share has meant a return on equity of less than 10 percent for British Aerospace, Rice said, far below its target of 15 to 20 percent, the report said.

Although Airbus has taken initial steps toward becoming a private company unlike its private rival Boeing Co. (Nyse:BA) it is not required to disclose its financial results, the report said. But interviews with executives from the consortium and its partners suggest Airbus might be only marginally profitable, the report added.
