David,

What is interesting is that Apple spent 400M for Next's technology. They
did not spend this to get Jobs as a part-time consultant. They must be
planning on using it or incorporating portions of the OS or to get the
Web Objects technology which I understand is doing well.

Regarding Sun's implementation of OpenStep. About 2 years ago Sun
agreed to implement it's own version of the OpenStep API and has been
working with Next since then. They claimed that OpenStep will be Sun's
Object technology at the time and would bundle it in Solaris 2x. Since
then Sun has been quiet about this. If Apple adopts the API then Sun
may also put more into selling it's version. What I'm pointing out is
that this deal places Apple and Sun on the same path in implementing
their OS, Web, and client/server technologies.
Next also has a stategic relationship and is working closely with
Netscape. Another interesting twist is that Netscape's IFC technology
appears to be a Java implementation of the OpenStep API. It appears
to me that all these companies are converging to the same technology
base.
