FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -_ SMART Modular Technologies,
Inc. (Nasdaq: SMOD) announced today that it has expanded both its
Fremont, California and East Kilbride, Scotland facilities by
approximately 25,000 sq. ft. each.

"The expansion of both the Fremont and Scotland factories enables SMART
to increase manufacturing capacity, empowering the company to address
potential future opportunities," stated Iain MacKenzie, Vice President
of Manufacturing at SMART. "With the continuous addition of
state-of-the-art equipment at all four of our facilities, SMART can
achieve higher yield rates and faster turn- around times to meet the
demands of our OEM customers," continued MacKenzie.

Each of SMART's manufacturing facilities is equipped with high-speed
surface mount lines and test equipment. By employing the same
high-quality manufacturing and test procedures at all sites, SMART is
able to provide its customers with leading edge products at a reduced
time-to-market. SMART also employs a worldwide, build-to-order
business and manufacturing model to allow for superior logistics
management. In recognition of this dedication to consistent quality in
all of its products and factories, SMART was awarded its ISO9001
certification in December of 1997.

Today's release follows SMART's recent announcement to bolster its
already strong test capabilities through the addition of HP Rambus
Series testers. The new Rambus test systems will perform measurement
accuracy and "at speed" testing for this innovative new architecture.
This increase in accuracy and testing allows SMART to improve yields
and lower manufacturing costs, while at the same time achieving higher
quality in the devices tested.

Along with these new HP testers, SMART will also employ newly installed
x-ray systems for comprehensive solder connection inspection and fault
coverage. The x-ray systems inspect the accuracy of solder connections
on complex, double-sided modules by applying multiple x-rays at
different angles to the top and bottom of the modules, resulting in a
thorough inspection of the devices. The implementation of this x-ray
system will reduce manufacturing costs and shorten overall production time.

The expanded manufacturing facilities, implementation of accurate,
high- speed test and measurement equipment and consistent quality
spanning all areas of design, production and service demonstrates
SMART's preparedness for the future of complex memory module technologies.
