The Globe and Mail reports in a Canadian Press dispatch in its Monday
edition that a Vancouver-based disseminator of stock market news has gone
to court to block a new dissemination policy proposed by the Vancouver
Stock Exchange. Canada Stockwatch filed a lawsuit Friday in B.C. Supreme
Court, alleging the VSE's proposed policy, which would give a monopoly to
Toronto-based Canada NewsWire, represents an unlawful restraint of trade.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified general and punitive damages and a permanent
injunction against the VSE implementing the policy. In July, the VSE
decreed that beginning on Sept. 1, all listed companies would have to pay
the wire service 58 cents a word, otherwise the exchange would suspend
trading in the company's shares.
Competing wire services such as
Stockwatch, Canadian Corporate News and ISDN News Service have argued that
the policy will give Canada NewsWire a monopoly and cause their companies
irreparable harm.
