LuxSonor Announces New Super VCD Chipset; Available Now, the SVCD LS350 Fully Supports SVCD Specification
FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 21, 1998--LuxSonor Semiconductors Inc., a digital multimedia company providing "system-on-a-chip" solutions for the consumer and computer markets, today announced the SVCD LS350, an integrated chipset that will power super VCD players, the next generation of video CD players in the greater China market.
The LS350 fully conforms to the Super VCD (SVCD) specification published by the China Ministry of Information Industry (MII), which is receiving widespread industry support and is soon expected to be adopted as an IEC standard.
"We are excited to bring to market one of the first chipsets that fully conforms to the new SVCD specification," said Harold Liang, chairman and CEO of LuxSonor. "The LS350 will enable VCD manufacturers to provide consumers with a significant upgrade in player quality and performance for only a small additional cost over existing players."
Whereas existing VCD players are based on MPEG-1 video compression, the SVCD LS350 incorporates advanced MPEG-2 video quality into a CD format, delivering consumers greater entertainment value at a reasonable cost. The chipset, which includes LuxSonor's state-of-the-art SonorRISC and SonorDSP processors, delivers close to DVD quality video and multi-channel surround audio. The SVCD LS350 supports not only SVCD titles, but will also decode and play titles based on previous VCD standards, including VCD 1.x, 2.0 and 3.0.
A large number of low-cost, Super VCD titles conforming to the MII specification are expected to become available in China in the next few months. LuxSonor anticipates that a number of VCD manufacturers will bring Super VCD players to market in the next two to three months, in time for volume shipments during the holiday selling season.
