Rational Strengthens Integration Between Rose 98 and IBM VisualAge For Smalltalk Via Partnership With Ensemble Systems
Ensemble's RoseLink for VisualAge Smalltalk Provides Round-Trip Engineering Between Rational Rose 98 and VisualAge for Smalltalk 4.5 Applications And Parts
September 21, 1998 01:10 PM
CUPERTINO, Calif., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Rational(R) Software Corporation RATL today announced that Ensemble Systems, a RoseLink partner, will offer software developers an even closer integration between Rational Rose(R) 98 and IBM's VisualAge for Smalltalk 4.5. Ensemble's RoseLink for VisualAge Smalltalk (RLVS) goes a step beyond forward and reverse engineering applications, classes, attributes, methods and parameters by supporting round-trip engineering for visual and non-visual Parts to and from the VisualAge for Smalltalk development environment.
"Rational's commitment to Smalltalk developers and our strong partnership with IBM led us to partner with Ensemble to provide tight integration between Rose 98 and VisualAge Smalltalk," said Gregory L. Meyers, vice president and general manager of visual modeling products for Rational Software. "Ensemble's expertise in the Smalltalk market will provide Rose 98 users with seamless bi-directional integration to the VisualAge Smalltalk environment."
"The RoseLink for VisualAge Smalltalk integration focuses on making it easy for Smalltalk developers to benefit from the project scalability and object-oriented analysis and design capabilities of Rational Rose," said Mike Bacinschi, vice president of technology of Ensemble Systems Inc. "Ensemble worked closely with Rational, as a RoseLink partner, and IBM, as a member of the Object Connection Program, to offer VisualAge for Smalltalk users a completely integrated solution for designing and coding their applications."
RoseLink for VisualAge Smalltalk
RoseLink for VisualAge Smalltalk (RLVS) offers VisualAge for Smalltalk developers a seamless bi-directional integration between Rational Rose 98 and VisualAge for Smalltalk. Developers can benefit from object-oriented design using Rose 98, then automatically generate the code framework for VisualAge for Smalltalk projects. With the code framework of the system already implemented, developers can take advantage of the VisualAge for Smalltalk development environment to rapidly complete the implementation. As the implementation is completed, any modifications to the code can be reverse engineered to update the model of the system in Rose.
RLVS provides full round-trip engineering capabilities for VisualAge for Smalltalk applications, classes, attributes, methods, parameters and Parts. Developers can forward engineer selected Rose items using a Smalltalk sub-menu in Rose or reverse engineer selected items from the IDE using the RoseLink menu added to the VisualAge applications browser. RLVS also includes Rose properties that allow developers to identify Smalltalk specific implementation issues that are not normal extensions of the UML. One of these properties provides developers the ability to define classes, attributes and events in Rose as visual or non-visual Parts. As Parts are forward engineered to the IDE, developers can complete their implementation using the VisualAge Editors.
