U.S. TRADING SUMMARY: U.S. stocks reclaimed some ground at midday, but remained under heavy pressure as new uncertainties loomed over Japan's economic recovery efforts, rattling investors around the globe. Fear that a political compromise on measures to fix Japan's collapsing banking system has fallen apart sent stocks in Tokyo to a fresh 12-year low and triggered sell-offs in other markets in Asia and Europe before reaching U.S. shores. A series of profit warnings from companies in the United States and Europe further clouded the market's day. At midday the Dow Jones industrial average was down 95 points, at 7,800. On the NYSE, declines trounced advances 2,074 to 739 on trading volume of 319 million shares. Trading volume was somewhat lightened by the absence of many investors because of the Jewish High Holy Days. The Nasdaq Composite lost 19 points, to 1,645 and the S&P 500 index fell 12, to 1,008. |
