M2 PRESSWIRE-21 September 1998-AMPEX: LNN chooses Ampex DST for its near on-line archive solution (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Working closely with Drake Automation Limited, the Ampex DST 712 library has been chosen to provide the main near on-line storage for London News Network (LNN).

Based around a dual drive Ampex DST 712 automated cartridge library, the solution provides in excess of 450 hours (at 18Mbps) of video storage.

LNN intends to develop a transmission system that ultimately will be as free from videotape as possible. All programming, irrespective of the number of repeats, can therefore be transmitted directly from videodisk transmission servers.

The DST 712 library provides high speed on-line storage to enable rapid access to the stored video content. The dual drives can provide an aggregate of 40 megabytes per second sustained and thus transfers video at a rate equivalent to 13 times real time. Combined with an industry-leading robotic tape exchange rate of 400 full exchanges per hour and rapid search times of 1.6GBs, the average latency time to retrieve a file is less than 20 seconds, from anywhere within 3.8 terabytes.

Important to the selection criteria was the ability to expand the system in terms of capacity and performance. Paul Wilcox, Technical Controller of LNN, stated that: "The Ampex DST technology not only offered the highest performance available today but combined with the options to expand the system, also represents the best value and cost of ownership available."

Ampex Corporation (Amex:AXC) headquartered in Redwood City, California, USA, is one of the world's leading providers of technologies for the acquisition, storage and processing of visual information.
