Ramsey,

>>What is the real figure?<<

The 64k question. I have no idea. As a side note, I suppose one could
argue that the downtrend in the japanese market is a proxy for
greater disclosure or "transparency" of the financial condition of
each of it participants. Yet I wonder how many investment dollars
have been lost over the years b/c of the lack of disclosure and
failure to understand the associated risks. I don't know that
answer.

The financial institutions are of particular interest to me b/c of my
background as transactional counsel to money center financial
institutions as well as regional banks and local S&L's. It was at least
my view then that institutional "exposure" was exceedingly difficult
to quantify given the multitude of the types of transactions
engaged in. This was before the proliferation of derivatives that
today we hear so much about.

Given the foregoing, for the very large part, I have resisted
investment in domestic financial institutions despite the greater
disclosure requirements. Investment in foreign finacial institutions
is well outside my risk parameters. This may well be a weakness
in my investment perspective so take it with a grain of salt. <g>
I am merely trying to describe my position not advocate it for
anyone else.

>There has been a discussion about hard vs soft landing. To me, it is
not necessary. Japan and the global economy cannot handle anything
hard today without risking a panic reaction.<

I agree.

>Just 2cents<

Good comments. Thanks.
