I reread this post and decided that I got a bit carried away with my tone. Too serious. Nonetheless my shamelessness is so complete that I'll belabor the topic with a whole 'nother remembrance.
I'm thinking back to my tenth-grade history class. The teacher averred that he wasn't gonna test us so much on facts as ideas. No sweat, thought I, I'm pretty agile with an idea. So I dropkicked the material. *duh.* Which is the bigger task - to recite facts or to formulate an opinion based thereon? I learned the hard way that studying the background material is not replaceable by discussing principles or opinions. (It was not a pretty sight when I struggled to form and defend an opinion when I had failed to familiarize myself with the legislative form of the Weimar Republic.) Indeed, forming an opinion worth its weight in three-hole ruled paper (before word procesors <nostalgic sigh>) kinda had as a precondition a familiarity with the material. Sneaky devil. Not only did he want us to know the assignments, he wanted us to understand them well enough to construct arguments!
So - there is an irreducible virtue to learning multiplication tables and all the state capitals and memorizing some Shakespeare couplets. Sometimes we need to ask our offspring to just trust us when we say it's for their own good to plow thru all this homework. :-)
