Are you implying that a man who spent 23 years with the scribes remained illiterate? Impossible! Show me the proof.
What proof do you want? His entire community knew him to be illiterate. He could not write nor could he read. Everything was done by recitation to get the Qur'anic words.
This is why the pagans of his time had such a hard time denying the Qur'an's divine origin. In the Qur'an, it mentions how his people knew him to be illiterate, and yet somehow words were flowing from his mouth that were more beautiful than anyone had ever written (and than anyone has written). The people never knew him to be a writer, an orator, a speaker, a poet, etc. So naturally when he began speaking the Qur'anic verses, people were in shock as to how or where they were coming from.
Isaiah 29:11-12
And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed: And the book is delivered to him that is not learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I am not learned.
There's also the point that if you want to say that Muhammad was literate (that is, he lied to his people), you have another problem to deal with. His people knew him to be the most honest and trustworthy person. Before the Qur'an was ever revealed to Muhammad (Pbuh), he was known as "El Amin," which means the honest one.
