HONG KONG, CHINA, 1998, SEP 21 (NB) -- By IT Daily. Ascend Communications [NASDAQ:ASND] has been chosen to supply core switching equipment for the construction of China Telecom's multimedia backbone.
The installation forms part of an ambitious network being created by China Telecom to bring the most advanced voice and data services to Chinese consumers. Alongside interprovincial networks, the multimedia backbone complements a broadband backbone based on Ascend's ATM frame relay technology which covers Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and 28 other cities.
"Ascend is honored to have the opportunity to participate in a project of such importance to China's future," said Joe Roissier, Asia-Pacific director of marketing at Ascend. "To enrich people's lives through access to information services, China Telecom is taking advantage of the most advanced technologies available. It is creating a next-generation public network combining frame relay, ATM and IP technologies, and fulfilling a vision of the 'new public network' that it also shared by Ascend."
Ascend is a vocal proponent of what it calls the new public network. Incorporating technologies such as CBX and B-STDX wide-area network switches employed in China's multimedia backbone, Ascend delivers high-speed multi-service capabilities on a single high-capacity platform.
The B-STDX family of broadband packet switches offers a combination of frame relay, ATM, SMDS, ISDN and IP technology in one platform. With the highest port density in the industry, B-STDX products allow service providers to build cost-effective networks that support speeds ranging from sub-DSO to OC-3/STM1.
