Del,
<<The main focus of most high schools now is to have the best football team.>>
Depressing to know that they are still off on that nonsense. When I was in high school they made an enormous, lavish, fuss over the football team, band, cheerleaders, etc., with the whole town turning out on Saturdays to cheer the old team on to absolutely certain defeat. The coach was a real animal; he had one good player, and stuck him with the ball on every play, after filling his ears up with do-it-for-the-old-school garbage. The poor kid had knee problems, but was encouraged to be a man and play on; he had major surgery before the end of his senior year.
I played soccer, and we actually won a few championships, but the school never even acknowledged our existence. Probably thought we were queens, pinkos, Speakers of Other Languages, or some other Un-American species.
I thought they'd dumped that crap years ago.
