It does appear that the internet search feature is improved over MS Win95/98 version.

NT has had the "information server" add-on available for a while. It indexes all the files in your computer and can extend searches beyond your local disk to other IIS on the network.

The implementation is neat. The file system in NT is a full-fledged database system, which in particular means you can have trigger call-backs for operations on the it. So IIS registers and "index_update" call-back function as a trigger for any create/modify operations on the file system database.
