Nortel (Northern Telecom) Delivers
Mission-Critical Internet Telephony
Application Solutions to ISPs

OTTAWA, Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ - Nortel (Northern Telecom) (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL), today announced
that it is working with Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ - news) to better address the
intensifying Internet service providers' needs of delivering mission-critical Internet solutions to their
subscribers. Nortel's Internet Telephony Applications - Voice Button, Internet Call Waiting and Internet
Conferencing products - will be offered on Compaq's Windows NT Server-based ProLiant 800.

''In today's dynamic marketplace, one must be ready with the right services at the right time in order to
win. Working with industry leaders Nortel and Compaq, service providers beat the odds,'' said Lois
Levick, Director Global Telecommunications Equipment Manufacturer Program, Compaq.
''Time-to-revenue is accelerated with these three exciting and innovative offerings developed by Nortel for
business and residential subscribers, on Compaq's reliable Window's NT server-based ProLiant 800
platform.''

This collaboration will combine Nortel's Internet Telephony applications and Compaq's platform
integration and support teams to deliver revenue-generating, turn-key solutions to service providers.
Nortel's Internet Telephony applications are based on Microsoft's low-cost-of-entry, easy-to-manage,
Windows NT and can be easily introduced to a service provider's installed based. To promote the new
offerings to their subscribers, Nortel and Compaq have also developed a joint marketing program for
service providers.

Nortel's Internet Telephony Applications Group is developing mission-critical, innovative Internet-based
applications that combine the company's network leadership and global experience. The current portfolio
includes: Nortel Internet Voice Button. This web 'sales tool' bridges the Internet and the public switched
telephone network, allowing users to establish an immediate voice connection with a business by
simply clicking an icon on the company's Web page. Nortel Internet Call Waiting notifies subscribers of
incoming calls through a pop-up window on their computer while in an Internet session and allows them
to accept or redirect the call. Internet Conferencing allows service providers to offer small and
medium-size business customers an easy-to-use, affordable Internet-based conferencing solution that
integrates multi-point, full-duplex, audio conferencing and real-time data collaboration.
