Com21 and Siemens Win Key Deployment With Brazilian Telephone Operator Telegoias
Telegoias Telephone Operator to Use Com21's ComUNITY Access System for Large-Scale Data-Over-Cable Service in Brazil
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1998-- Com21, Inc. (Nasdaq:CMTO - news) announced today that Siemens has won a key cable modem deployment in Brazil.
Siemens, a Com21 worldwide systems integration partner, has received an order from Telegoias, a telephone operator located in Brazil, for the Com21 ComUNITY Access(R) System and 1,000 ComPORT cable modems. This system will be installed later this year to deliver high-speed communication within the capital city of Goiania.
Telephone operator Telegoias serves over 1 million people in the capital city Goiania in the state of Goias, located about 125 miles west of Brasilia, Brazil's capital city. Telegoias will have 115,000 households passed at the end of the current deployment phase.
Telegoias conducted rigorous lab tests for three months to verify that the Com21 equipment met the operator's technical specifications and needs. Com21 cable modem systems will be supplied through the Siemens sales organization, which will also support integration, installation and introduction of the service.
President of Com21 Peter Fenner said, ''Siemens world-class customer service and technical expertise, combined with Com21's cutting edge and reliable technology, has resulted in a successful partnership that provides an advanced cable modem solution. We are pleased to have been selected by Telegoias. We continue to experience rapid deployment of our ComUNITY Access system in cable modem services worldwide.''
Siemens has already deployed the ComUNITY Access system in Europe, Latin America, and Asia. Siemens supplies telecommunication and cable TV network configurations tailored to the service provider's requirements for the performance of broadband multi-service networks.
''Telegoias chose Com21 because of its Quality of Service (QoS), scalability, robustness and the fact that the system does exactly what Com21 says it will do,'' said Rodrigo Uchoa, computing and information systems engineer at Telegoias. ''Another factor that influenced the decision was Com21's Return Path Multiplexer (RPM) solution, which enables cost-effective deployment even during initial times of sparse market penetration,'' said Carlos Baptista, Siemens CATV operators key account manager. The unique design of the RPM product combats ingress noise issues without sacrificing performance or forcing the cable operator to offer reduced QoS levels in some locations within the service area. Com21's ComUNITY System will be deployed as the local access segment of a metropolitan network offering high speed Internet and data communications services in Goiania, both to households and businesses. Telegoias, along with other recently privatized telephone companies, is a member of Tele CentroSul, a telecommunications company spanning eight Brazilian states. |
