Fwiw, I agree completely with his comments on bailouts #reply-5811377 While some progress has been made in recent years, the foxes are still in charge of the henhouse down there. Far too much capital and aid 'falls off the lorry', as the Brits would say, on the way to being placed in productive employment. A major factor here is the obscurity (and accuracy, and timeliness) of reporting, the lack of accountability, of governments and companies.
Perhaps the principal reason for the trust in and the predominance of the US economy is its relative transparency - if your publicly-traded US company doesn't file audited financials on time it doesn't trade (except on the bulletin board). US citizens demand the right to records of their government's actions - and obtain those records. This doesn't happen everywhere - just watch a shareholder of a Japanese bank inquire as to an accurate picture of its bad loan situation. And M‚xico imho would make Japan look clear and open, while M‚x is not the worst of the lot by a long shot.
