Telesystem, Sprint seen in Brazil phone auction Reuters, Tuesday, September 22, 1998 at 13:07 BRASILIA, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Canada's Telesystem International Wireless Inc (TSE:TIW) and Sprint Corp. (NYSE:FON) of the United States are interested in Brazil's plan to auction telephone licenses this year, a privatization official said Tuesday. "Representatives of Sprint have told me personally of their interest in taking part in the auction and I know that Telesystem is interested," Jose Pio Borges, vice president of the National Development Bank (BNDES) told reporters. Brazil is scheduled to auction three fixed-line telephone licenses and another concession to provide long-distance and international services December 2. The firms that win the licenses, known locally as "mirror" concessions, will compete directly with the fixed-line and long-distance subsidiaries of former federal telecommunications holding Telebras privatized in July.
