If I buy systems, I want it open. If I invest, I want it to be a proprietary gorilla. Big difference.

Name a high tech gorilla that is not built on proprietary standard. Microsoft has Win32 API. Intel has x86. Cisco has their switching protocol. Lucent has install base of telephony equipment in the Baby Bells.

COMS could make Ethernet proprietary and maybe it is a gorilla now. Now it is just another monkey in the forest.

SUNW is doing it right. It makes Java sound like an open standard to gain support but in reality it is not open. Sun can take Java to v2.0 or Java2001 any time it wants to. We will see how the cards get played.
