You know, Freddy and I had a fierce PM exchange about this---the thing is my opinion of Clinton is as poor as Freddy's-well-maybe not QUITE---and so I've been trying to verbalize what it is that has me so icked out. ( I made that up-do you like it?) and why he feels as if I'm not on the same side.
I think it's the all too obvious eagerness of the prosecution to rub our faces in our President's disgusting behavior. It isn't that I don't think he's guilty or that he shouldn't be punished if indeed he has committed impeachable offenses. It's just the -motivation? the rush to tattle? Freddy points out that the Democrats have been just as eager in the past to use these same weapons against Republicans. But one of the precepts we try to teach the kids is that one nasty turn does not justify another. I hate to have to add, "except in politics where the faster and uglier the better".
He also reminds me that Congress won't act unless they feel the public wants them to, and the public won't unless they get so disgusted and disillusioned by CLinton's lying and manipulating that they turn on him and demand action. In that respect, I think the tapes may have backfired. Personally , I have a threshold for sordidness and nastiness, beyond which I just turn it off. And I think many people saw Clinton in the victim role yesterday.
And we are suckers for victims. No matter how undeserving.
