Also it appears a 64 bit version of NT was tested on a Merced emulator which would indicate a 64 bit version exists in some form. Most users only need the 64 bit file addressing capability (ask DEC for their experience with the cold reception for AlphaUNIX and VMS 64 bit). NT supports some weak version of 64 file addressing on intel, so does Solaris. I wonder if the 64 emulated NT is the weak version or the strong version. Does the alpha version of NT uses the 64 bit capabilities of the Alpha chip? I couldn't find a reference to it in microsoft's web site. NT 5 this Spring would have some effect on Apple. Would be better if OS X came out first. I kind of assume OS X and a consumer version of NT 5 will be roughly in the same ballpark technology wise. So it seems. I still think the OS battle is lost for Apple. Linux has a slight chance, if they ever get to giving it a decent GUI interface both user and API (hint: dump X windows).
