Not so sure "Stempel is a liability." His performance in person and in interviews is highly professional. GM is a huge enterprise. Anyone pushing electric cars over there might see him as a key ally. Opponents may call him a has been.

At 65, he's clearly in what some psychologists call his "generativity" phase, i.e., wanting very much to leave a legacy around the key concerns of his life. Stan and Iris are also there. People who have resolved earlier issues of maturation and who have arrived as somewhat "whole" in this stage of development tend to be highly trustworthy. They are no longer trying to "prove" something. They can be much more oriented toward future generations.

On the other hand, if he's actually in a semi-retired condition heading up an enterprise with phenomenal promise, but little concrete results then we clearly need a younger guy. Bob is quoted recently as saying that we ought to see a profit in 2001. If we can get any sort of momentum toward that object (e.g., positive year-to-year comparisons), I'm behind him. If this year's numbers really stink, it's hard to say what to do.

As one who thinks of himself as an environmentalist deeply concerned about the usual stuff, ECD is one of the few places one can go where solutions are being persued with concrete products rather than moving rhetoric (TGN being another.)
