I don't know if QCOM will become another MSFT. While it is certainly true that QCOM would have a shot at better profits right now if their factories were all online, it is not realistic that QCOM could have completed construction on all of the facilities they would need before this point.

They are faced with the task of building a ladder to the top as they go, using materials they find along the way. So far I think they are doing very well.

The alliances give them their only chance of getting CDMA into widespread use. Sure they loose a lot by 'giving it away' to others, but they are also insuring that they get a piece of the pie.

I think QCOM can have a very bright future. But this bright future is not nearly as much a certainty as I thought it was when I initially bought into the company. There are a lot of IF's, What if's, and " I hope so's."

At this point in their growth the most important asset in their company is good managment, not their technology.

Overall I do not see many companies out there that offer the possibilty of growth like QCOM does. But I see it as the "possibility" of growth. For myself, QCOM is the principle investment in the "speculative" sector of my portfolio. Less than 5% of my stock money is in QCOM.
If you read through the threads throughout SI, you will find many spots where the followers of a particular stock see "their" stock as we tend to see QCOM.

If it rockets to the sky I am aboard. But if it doesn't I am not going to suffer in a big way.

Mike
