Here are my silly thoughts on the matter:

I think the fact that we have a two-party system leads to polarization. There's not much difference between moderate Democrats and moderate Republicans, but in order to distinguish one party from the other, their internal politics favor politicians who take extreme view. That's why the Democrats are most often liberal, and the Republicans most often conservative, leading the average moderate American to be disappointed.

Our "winner-take-all" system discourages other parties. In countries where citizens vote for the party, and a party winning only 5% will still win 5% of the seats in the Parliament, there is a greater motivation for the formation of these smaller parties, and more motivation for people to vote for them without thinking they are throwing away their votes.
