Hitachi (6501) To Close Chip Plant In Tokyo

TOKYO (Nikkei)-Hitachi Ltd. will close a semiconductor plant in the western Tokyo city of Kokubunji at the end of the month, company sources said Tuesday. Part of the operations at the plant, where the company's semiconductor manufacturing business began in 1958, will be moved to a device development center in the nearby city of Ome.

The company earlier predicted its chip division will post consolidated operating loss of some 120 billion yen in fiscal 1998.

The Kokubunji plant had been producing advanced models of microcontrollers and memories until the early 1990s. Since then, however, it has made mainly prototypes since its location in a residential neighborhood ruled out further expansion.

Some 100 engineers at the plant will be transferred to the device development center and other divisions. The closure is expected to result in cost savings of several billion yen a year.

Development and design work for microcontrollers and other logic chips will continue at the former plant site, the sources said.
