Brit Doctors Expect Rush on Viagra Tuesday, September 22, 1998; 7:58 a.m. EDT LONDON (AP) -- British physicians said they expect a high demand for Viagra, with some expecting as many as 15 patients a week asking for the new anti-impotence drug, according to a survey. Three-quarters of the family doctors surveyed also said Viagra should be available through the National Health Service, Britain's universal medical care program. The drug was licensed by the European Union last week, but Health Secretary Frank Dobson has decided the drug will not be available through Britain's health service. The survey by the British Broadcasting Corp. asked 100 doctors what level of demand they expected, based on their knowledge of their local population and previous inquiries from patients about the drug, which has just become available in Britain. Many doctors expected between one and five patients to ask them for Viagra over the next few weeks, the survey found. About one in three thought between five and 15 patients a week would ask for Viagra, while 11 surveyed expected more than 15 patients seeking the drug. The survey showed that doctors did not believe the pill should be prescribed for recreational uses, and there was also clearly a desire for some prioritization and rationing of the drug, the BBC said.
