No, they haven't dumped that crap. My high school, of about 500 students, had 2 coaches to cover all sports, and teach drivers ed, and have a homeroom. My son's school of about 300 had 26 coaches the last time that I checked. The first thing that you see at most high schools is the trophy case, with nearly all of them for sports, and a few puny ones for academics. It sends a very strong message that, to be popular, don't try to get too smart, play sports. And we wonder why we spend the most money per student in the world, but produce some of the dumbest kids.
I went to a local festival last Saturday, and the young fellow in the ticket booth took about thirty seconds to figure up my change when I gave him a ten. The 2 tickets were $3 each. That is a pretty tough one though. I thought it was a fluke, but just a minute later the young lady selling tickets for cokes had the same trouble giving change for my $5 when the tickets came to $3. I am not making this up. I am perfectly serious.
I don't dare giving $11 for a $6 purchase to save them from using so many singles anymore, unless they have a cash register to do the figuring, because it throws them into a panic. Even some with cash registers sometimes return the extra dollar, saying that I gave them too much, looking at me like I am the dumb one. I then tell them to punch the $11 into the register, and see what happens, and still a lot of them give me a blank stare. They are the ones at the grocery store that are always holding up the line while they are waiting for a new pack of singles.
