David, I personally do not consider "feminist" an insult word, any more than I consider "liberal" an insult word. But some people DO use both terms as insults.

Also, I must confess that the distinction you draw between "feminist" and "feminist leadership" escapes me. Presumably, a "rank and file" feminist would share at least some convictions with the feminist "leadership". And why would it be "shameful" to be "accused" of belonging to the leadership???
