I do agree that a lot of silly and worthless stuff is claimed to be art for a time, even sometimes by significant factions within the arts community.

And I think that private support for the arts is essential. But I think public support is very important as well.

Throughout the history of high art, governmental support at one level or another, and usually from the top, has been very important in supporting high artistic achievement. I think its much better for government to support art with some degree of generosity, and end up supporting some garbage along with some great work, and a lot of reasonable efforts of some value, than to choke off fairly open avenues for supporting creativity.
