Well, then we do disagree on this one dougjn.
IMO, there are so many other areas where those tax $$s can be better spent,therefore, the private community should carry this particular burden.
Besides, corporations are forever looking for ways to promote themselves in positive ways to their particular community in order to draw in new customers or to enhance their public image.
Supporting the arts is a natural for large corporations, banks, etc. In my local community alone, our bank sponsors the Symphony orchestra and has restored antique paintings at the community college. It's a perfect fit. Of course, the executives & their wives use these opportunities for cocktail parties, teas, etc. in order to advertise their "community service" & ,not unimportantly, attract new customers.
In this way, government can use tax monies for educational aid(one area where I disagree strongly with conservatives), immunization for children, programs that help the impoverished elderly population,etc.,etc.,etc. -- in the end, there just isn't enough tax $$s to guarantee that no American, who is truly unable to provide for their own basic needs, does not die for lack of medical care, winter heat, etc.
