Osprey, no need to be sorry (IMO). North Americans these days not only do not know how to spell, they don't even know how to do basic arithmetic and they think it doesn't matter thanks to spell checkers and calculators. FWIW, in my books it reflects our level of education in general.
Go and ask anyone under 30 about geography or world history; you'll either get a blank stare or a comment like "who cares".
The concept of a good basic education has fallen by the wayside. Kids are allowed to drop subjects if they don't like them or are no good at them. We are creating "Fachidioten" (in my native language) which are people who are very educated in a particular area yet have little to no knowledge in general terms.
But than again what can you expect from a school system that only operates approximately 6 out of 12 months and refuses to fail kids.
It's a disgrace and a disservice to the kids.
