John,
Shaman (SHMN) is in the midst of a Phase II trial for their herpes drug. You may want to take a look at this one. They derived it from an African plant of some sort and I imagine its side effect profile is fairly benign.

I don't believe the GILD drug is that far off (4-5 years) unless they encounter some problems, in which case the drug may not be worth much. There are a bunch of companies in addition to these two working in this area.
