Dow Jones Newswires -- September 23, 1998 Advanced Micro Tech Officer Says Chip Deal Is Imminent Dow Jones Newswires NEW YORK -- Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) expects to reach another agreement for a computer maker to use its new K6-300 chip, said Chief Technology Officer Atiq Raza. In an interview on CNBC Wednesday, he said an announcement was "imminent" but declined to provide further details. Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) already has said it will use the K6, the chip Advanced Micro hopes will provide some competition for Intel Corp. (INTC) chips. Compaq is using the chip, which is less expensive than Intel's comparable chip, to make a laptop that will be more affordable. "It is already enabling a dramatic shift in price for the laptop computer market," Raza said. Raza said the new chip, which operates at "levels comparable to the best that Intel has," will allow Advanced Micro to win market share.
