Cable vs ADSL

Hey Pat:

They tell me by the year 2000 over 25% of all the internet connections will be through cable modem.I can get a cable connection right now for $39/month and change but the cable modem costs $299,their advert said the connection is 150x the speed of tel connection.I don't know much about ADSL but even if it is a stop-gap measure until cable becomes more pervasive and cheaper I guess Dell wants to be there and besides I think the deal with ATT is also may be a cable play, did they just buy Malone's TCI? Also the other day someone announced a single-chip technology for cable modems which makes the deal probably more affordable as the current $299.00 modems use multiple chips (I guess three).

Hey you are the engineer, you tell us what the deal is.<ggg>

PS:
perhaps Cable and ADSL will coexist and dell wants to be there whether it is one, the other or both. Also as things develop DELL can also sign up new deals to exploit the opportunities as I don't think for a minute this is the last deal that DELL will ever make .Wonder why DELL chose Excite first instead of Yahoo?
