Max, >>>"23 September 98 Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) rose 2 3/16 to 20 15/16 after Intel announced they would layoff 3,000 jobs after conceding that chip makers including Advanced Micro Devices Inc are increasing market share with their low-priced machines."<<<
Shows to go you what kind of slanted, incorrect garbage you can find on the Internet. The guy that wrote the story that way ought to be fired (of course, it's probably an Intel hater with a web page. Big deal, it wouldn't be the first one.). Here's how the San Jose Mercury News correctly reported the part about Intel cutbacks:
Intel Corporation, still striving to trim its workforce, will lay off about 650 manufacturing workers over the next year at the Massachusetts chip plant it purchased from DEC . The company said the reductions, - about 40% of the plant's total employment will result in greater efficiency but will not reduce output at the plant. As part of a legal settlement with Digital, which has since been acquired by Compaq, Intel agreed to make Digital's Alpha chips at the plant. An Intel spokesman said the Massachusetts layoffs are unrelated to the company's ongoing efforts - announced in April - to reduce its 65,000 member workforce by 3,000, mostly by attrition.
The 3,000 attrition (mostly) cutback, announced in April, had nothing to do with today's or yesterday's announcements or who has market market share today, as that guy implies. It is old news. Talk about your yellow journalism. That piece of crap is even yellow!
