<<The subject of wether society has gotten worse or better on subjects such as crime, morals etc can provide hours of endless enjoyable debate, preferably over port and cigars>>

Well, Henry, now you are talking my language and I too would not waste a good Arturo Fuente as Bill would. I think your reference to Sturgeon's law is fascinating and would enjoy the discussion. Perhaps someday.

While I feel incensed by the story of your grandfather's brother I am not sure anecdotal evidence serves the discussion. For each beaten child of the 1890s I am sure that I can find a story of a beaten child in the 1990s.

I am not sure there is any hope of either side making a point here. While I think it must be true that political office holders are under greater scrutiny today then they ever have been, I am not sure that it is cause to turn a blind eye to what is revealed as a result.

By the way, there are exceptions to Sturgeon's law. One that comes to mind is Barbara Tuchmann's "March of Folly". Another is the more recent debunking of Kennedy's camelot (which I have not read). One should seek a well balanced view IMO.
Best,
Stitch

(By the way, I am just experiencing the finish on a Te Amo, a product of Mexico...a bit harsh but a delight at the beginning.)
