Wired, Inc. Ships MPEG2/DVD Realtime Encoder Board for Windows95 and Windows98
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1998--Wired, Inc. today begins shipping mPress(TM), the industry's smallest and most affordable MPEG2/DVD realtime encoder, for Windows95/98(R).
Based on Argon(TM), Wired's realtime encoder for PowerMacintosh(R) computers, mPress combines the latest digital video technology to capture and compress video and audio signals into fully compatible MPEG1 or MPEG2 bitstreams for media network transmissions and DVD/SuperVCD authoring.
mPress
mPress is a single short PCI card that operates in Windows95 and Windows98 computers. mPress encodes video in realtime into MPEG1 or MPEG2 streams, CBR (Constant Bit Rate) or VBR (Variable Bit Rate), from 128kb/s up to 15Mb/s, scalable up to Full-D1 resolution NTSC or PAL. mPress also encodes audio in realtime into MPEG or PCM streams, 32KHz, 44.1KHz, 48KHz, and 96KHz sample rates.
Included with the hardware board is a complete, easy to use, software application for realtime creation of a variety of MPEG streams (Elementary Video & Audio, Multiplexed System and Program streams) which are fully compatible with Video CD, SuperVideoCD, and DVD authoring systems.
The mPress software also allows realtime preview of the encoded material for review before and during recording. Also available is a complete API for incorporating mPress within custom applications.

Realtime encoding
The realtime operation of mPress gives content producers immediate access to their MPEG files for quick incorporation into their multimedia project. A one hour movie takes one hour to encode. This realtime operation is also crucial for any type of network movie distribution system since the video and audio must be encoded ''on the fly'' with the data being sent immediately over a network.
Specifications
mPress is a short 7'' PCI board that has a Composite Video input, S-Video input, and a Line-Level Audio input. mPress is fully expandable to Component and Serial D-1 video inputs and AC-3 audio encoding.
Availability
mPress for Windows95 and Windows98 is shipping NOW in the GINSENG board bundle, which includes 1 mPress encoding board, 1 MasonX decoding board, and a fully featured application software package. The GINSENG bundle is US$4999 SRP qty 1. The PowerMacintosh version started shipping July 1998. A WindowsNT(R) version will be available November '98.
