Patrick: Later on I will give a lot of effort into putting this into a global perspective, but one of the beliefs I have about this mess in SEA is that Japan and Korea both grew beyond their "talents" because they were coddled allies in the Cold War. Now, with a changing world, their support is not as greatly needed, and as a consequence, their personal economic world is going to be much more treacherous. I remember how difficult the Japanese were at the negotiating tables in the early 80's. Why were they tough? Because they knew the US had to give in in the interest of "national security". Those tricks don't work any more, and Japan needs to find another way of doing business.
