Joe, As others have already mentioned, CPQ has been actively involved in xDSL for some time now. I don't think there is an actual ADSL modem in the Presario yet, but it does come with IEE1394 firewire and ethernet support for cable modem compatibility. Remember, all this xDSL stuff is 'dreamware' for most of us in the U.S. At present, a small subset of cities is having the service rolled out, and it will not be widely available for years. In rural parts of the nation, it may NEVER be available due to distance constraints between your home and the central switching office. That's why cable will also be a force to contend with. Most users will be stuck with 56k for some time yet....

PS - To give you an example, I am on a list to be 'notified' when Bell Atlantic will be getting around to making the service available in my area. Currently, they are starting to deploy in the Washington DC area and Philadelphia. Next year, parts of New York (urban). I live a couple hours north of the city, so it will most likely be some time before it is available here.... As for cable, I asked, and my cable company's response was - 'we have to rebuild the system, see you in two years or so'... |
