Fred & Intel Investors - Intel Hires a Major PowerPC Design Manager
If you can't BEAT THEM - JOIN THEM !
Intel has hired Mark McDermott - former head of Motorola's Somerset Design Center - where the PowerPC chips were all designed. McDermoott will head up a new Intel Architecture Design Center in Austin, Texas.
McDermott appears to have superb credentials - in RISC design and "Systems-on-Chip". Intel has definitely added some real talent by hiring him.
This sounds like Intel's FOURTH (there may be more) major IA design site - Santa Clara, Portland, Israel and now Austin.
Why would Intel need FOUR MAJOR DESIN CENTERS ?
My guess is that the already BROAD line of IA CPUS will be expanded in future years to take advantage of Intel's increasingly successful wafer fab expertise.
I'll bet his hiring does not get reported on CNBC - they like to report only layoffs.

Development Center
Former Senior Director of Design Technology At Motorola to Run New Austin-based Facility
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 24, 1998--Intel Corporation [Nasdaq:INTC - news] today announced that it has named Mark McDermott to head Intel's newly founded Texas Development Center, which will be located in Austin.
McDermott's responsibilities will include product development for future Intel(R) Architecture microprocessors. He will report to Albert Yu, senior vice president of Intel's Microprocessor Products Group.
''Mark's addition will help build upon Intel's leadership position in developing future microprocessor products,'' Yu said. ''We're very pleased to have him on board as we expand our worldwide development activities to include the new Texas Development Center.''
Before joining Intel, McDermott worked as director of Motorola's Somerset Design Center, in the Network and Computer Systems Group (NCSG), which serves as the location for all PowerPC(a) development for the IBM/Motorola joint venture. During that time he helped found the company's Advanced Systems Technology Lab (ASTL) where he served as director of ''System on a Chip'' Design Technology.
''Austin is home to substantial microprocessor development expertise and I'm excited to help drive Intel's expansion into this growing region,'' McDermott said. ''The professional and academic talent pool in Texas should provide an excellent foundation for future microprocessor innovation.''
McDermott holds a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of New Mexico and a masters degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas. He is a member of the IEEE, ACM, TSPE and NSPE. Additionally, McDermott holds 15 patents and has been published in seven technical publications.
