Before I leave for the dentist...a kinder story.

We named him Nipper. He had been flattened by the sow and in other ways was just too feeble to compete. We fed him from a baby bottle. As he grew bigger he would stand on his hind legs, front hooves against your legs as he nursed. He knew his name and would race across the yard when called to come. He came into the house freely and his little hooves made a clatter as he raced to jump up on you! He was always looking us in the eye, and reading our faces. He was a smart little guy!

He grew bigger, and bigger, and bigger...

One Christmas season when Nipper had gotten quite large, there appeared to be a disconcerting undercurrent to the conversations that were taking place. Most of us did not hear all of it, but we knew Nipper's future was being discussed. To make a long story short: the next day Nipper was missing...and I have not seen him since. My older brother did not eat next day. I can't remember whether I did or not. This was a long time ago...

None of us ever asked what happened to Nipper. We don't want to know.
