Solon,
The hog scene reminds me of childhood visits to grand-parents house. (We always popped them between the eyes with a .22...hogs not the grand-parents.) Visits were always scheduled for late fall so that my Dad could help on the hog butchering. Water would be boiling in troughs for 'scalding the bristles',fat would be rendered and cracklings stored away, and joints and sides of meat moved to the smokehouse and covered in 'cure'. It,also, reminds me of some sage advice offered by my father specifically for these visits..."If you don't know what you are eating, don't ask!" It has served me well over the years.

PS.Got them cornered in an old shed about 25x25...The worst of it all was the pandemonium, the terrible screaming and the continuous racing as they fought to find escape....
At first, I thought you were describing a typical night at home with the wolf.
