On Clarence Thomas, I think his nomination should have been fought strictly on his (quite limited) qualifications. As far as Anita Hill, the Judiciary committee tried to keep that under wraps. My understanding from Paul Simon's book is that there was other evidence that wasn't presented. I also recall a news clip with Alan Simpson holding a bunch of paper in his hand, and saying "In my hands I hold ten letters from people saying Anita Hill is a liar", or something like that. I couldn't tell if he was being self satirical or just paying homage to kindred spirit Joe McCarthy.

But, as George Bush said, he was "the best man for the job". How nice for Scalia to have 2 votes for the next 40 years. There was also the curious little side saga of David Brock, who rose to fame with the American Spectator over his Anita Hill hatchet job, only to fall from favor when Frank Rich supposedly "outed" him by calling him a misogynist. Since Newt's called Bill a misogynist, I don't know what to make of any of it.

Cheers, Dan.
