Actually, I am not sure what the US$ index is based on, although i believe it to be a basket of weighted currencies(mark, sterling, yen, etc.). The key of course is that when the index drops then gold rises. There are quite a few good charts at decision point related to xau, dollar, etc.http://decisionpoint.com/ChartsWeekly/00gold.htmlThis one shows the nearly 3 year downtrend in the xau will be broken with the next weekly close above 85.
