Redmond taking tiny steps in realtime market.

news off the net-

"Nematron writing custom NT HAL for Real-time performance tuning"

Microsoft has licensed real-time control specialist Nematron
Corporation to write and distribute its own version of the NT
hardware abstraction layer (HAL). Nematron plans to tune the
interrupts, cache management and memory handling to improve the
real-time performance of its Hyperkernel real-time subsystem for
NT, first on Intel and then on DEC Alphas. Normally a company
such as Nematron would rely on the standard HAL provided for the
MPU it's using, but creating a specialized HAL is well within the
NT rule book since it won't detract from standard NT applications
running on a system using the custom HAL. No doubt mindful that
NT's begun exploding in the real-time and embedded control
market, Redmond has given Nematron access to the standard NT HAL
source code, a packet of development code including sample source
code and a HAL library to craft its HAL from.

MSFT certainly has bigger fish to fry, but it's interesting to note that they do this type of licensing.
