Hi,
There is a significant oil pool in the Crossfield member of the Devonian Wabamum group at Olds, and a small pool at Okatoks (total reserves originally about 40 million barrels of oil in place for both pools). These oil pools are associated with the better known Crossfield sour gas play. Also, if I recall correctly, there were significant gas liquids reported from Hartel. In addition, in the foothills region, maximum depth of burial of the target formation is also important. This area is in the "vicinity" of the Nisku Hot Line, west of which all or most oil has been converted to gas. In brief, yes, it is possible to have an oil discovery here and a good one too, however, the trap will have to be structural, not breached and not wet. By the way, the oil industry still views the Early Carboniferous age Turner Valley oil pool as a bit of an enigma. As there are plenty of source rocks in this region, and seeing how the second slice of the Turner Valley Formation is essentially unexplored, there is all kinds of room for major but deep conventional oil and gas discoveries here.
regards,
teevee
