September 25, 1998
CLEVELAND--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation -- RELTEC Corporation (NYSE:RLT) today announced that TCI Telecommunications, Inc., the cable television operating unit of Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI), has awarded RELTEC a multi-million dollar campus residential project to deploy RELTEC's DISC*S(R) fiber-to-the-curb Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) system. The project, located at The Village development in Dallas, Texas, will serve 7,280 units with integrated voice, video and high-speed data service. The project will use RELTEC's DISC*S NGDLC system as the access delivery platform.
Leo J. Hindery, Jr., President of TCI, noted, "The Village project is an important step for TCI in evolving our broadband strategy across the full range of residential and business applications. This fiber-to-the-curb technology allows us to meet dynamic customer service needs with full-featured and cost effective capabilities."
Dudley P. Sheffler, President and Chief Executive Officer of RELTEC, added, "RELTEC is very pleased to add TCI to our list of service providers deploying Deep Fiber Solutions(SM). The Village Project is the beginning of what we believe will be a rapidly growing campus and multiple dwelling unit market for our Deep Fiber Solutions. The technology is proven, cost effective and fully broadband capable today."
RELTEC's Deep Fiber Solutions NGDLC system pushes digital fiber optics capability to within 500 feet of the subscriber, where the close proximity capability of copper is maximized. High-speed transmission, measured in millions of bits per second, becomes possible without any additional modulation electronics at the customer's premises. These Deep Fiber Solutions deliver broadband fiber optic access today at or below the costs of traditional narrowband systems in high-density environments. Additionally, advanced video and data feature sets for the Deep Fiber Solutions system provide high-speed internet access, analog and digital broadcast and interactive video services. RELTEC was the pioneer in NGDLC systems, delivering the industry's first NGDLC access system in 1988.
RELTEC believes that The Village project will be the largest of its kind, delivering a full range of broadband services from a single access delivery platform. The project is planned to be built-out in four phases, with the first service scheduled to be activated in the fourth quarter of 1998 and estimated to be completed in the third quarter of 1999.
